It will be a lie if I don’t concede that the Balcony Restaurant, which juts over the sea from the grounds of a small villa-style hotel, isn’t the most beautiful spot I’ve ever eaten a meal. Apparently, Danny’s guy is a former employee who had moved down to Jamaica and now ran this very high-class restaurant with million-dollar views. It is also the most romantic place I’ve ever seen.

When we entered, I felt seriously underdressed, but his buddy Paolo had a room waiting for me and an amazing silky kimono-style dress for me to slip into. It isn’t super revealing, but the fabric makes it feel seductive somehow. As they chat, I sit sipping a mojito after inhaling the most amazing ceviche I’ve ever eaten. I’m plotting how to keep the dress.

“Did you plan this?” I ask as Paolo leaves us to go deal with an issue in the kitchen.

Danny gives me a nod over his own rummy concoction. “I wanted it to be an amazing day.”

“Give yourself a gold star because you totally nailed it.” I cock my head. “I don’t understand why though?”

“Sure, you do,” he says, leaning back confidently in his chair.

“No, I don’t. You may have to spell it out for me.”

“I like you, and I always have. I’ve hated that you’ve hated me, and I wanted to fix it. I missed having you in my life.”

“You want to be friends?”

He tips his glass at me. “That’s a start.”

A start? That’s where this would start and finish. I cannot let this man any further under my skin. The stakes are way too high. “This is a lot of work for a friendship bracelet.”

“Well, I have a feeling they’re hard to get. You’ve probably handed out very few, and I want to earn mine.”

I shake my head. What am I going to do with him?

“Look, Sandy, not everyone wants something in return for being nice. Not everyone is out to use you or hurt you. I want us to be friends again, and I knew you would be kind of bummed after the wedding you didn’t want to happen actually happened. I also know it feels like Vivi chose Lance over you.” I go to speak, but he holds up his hand. “You’re going to tell me you know she didn’t, but that is what it feels like, and you hate that. You already miss her, and because of Lance, you know it’s going to be hard from now on. I just wanted to give you a nice day to . . . soften the blow. Oh yeah, and I wanted to spend time with you.”

That is quite a speech. And it leaves me speechless.

A waiter comes and brings us our main courses, buying me time to form a response.

“Well, thank you,” is all I have. It’s lame and inadequate, but it’s the best I can do. I am trying to ignore the truth of what he’s said and focus on the fact that he’s done all this for me.
