It will be a lie if I donât concede that the Balcony Restaurant, which juts over the sea from the grounds of a small villa-style hotel, isnât the most beautiful spot Iâve ever eaten a meal. Apparently, Dannyâs guy is a former employee who had moved down to Jamaica and now ran this very high-class restaurant with million-dollar views. It is also the most romantic place Iâve ever seen.
When we entered, I felt seriously underdressed, but his buddy Paolo had a room waiting for me and an amazing silky kimono-style dress for me to slip into. It isnât super revealing, but the fabric makes it feel seductive somehow. As they chat, I sit sipping a mojito after inhaling the most amazing ceviche Iâve ever eaten. Iâm plotting how to keep the dress.
âDid you plan this?â I ask as Paolo leaves us to go deal with an issue in the kitchen.
Danny gives me a nod over his own rummy concoction. âI wanted it to be an amazing day.â
âGive yourself a gold star because you totally nailed it.â I cock my head. âI donât understand why though?â
âSure, you do,â he says, leaning back confidently in his chair.
âNo, I donât. You may have to spell it out for me.â
âI like you, and I always have. Iâve hated that youâve hated me, and I wanted to fix it. I missed having you in my life.â
âYou want to be friends?â
He tips his glass at me. âThatâs a start.â
A start? Thatâs where this would start and finish. I cannot let this man any further under my skin. The stakes are way too high. âThis is a lot of work for a friendship bracelet.â
âWell, I have a feeling theyâre hard to get. Youâve probably handed out very few, and I want to earn mine.â
I shake my head. What am I going to do with him?
âLook, Sandy, not everyone wants something in return for being nice. Not everyone is out to use you or hurt you. I want us to be friends again, and I knew you would be kind of bummed after the wedding you didnât want to happen actually happened. I also know it feels like Vivi chose Lance over you.â I go to speak, but he holds up his hand. âYouâre going to tell me you know she didnât, but that is what it feels like, and you hate that. You already miss her, and because of Lance, you know itâs going to be hard from now on. I just wanted to give you a nice day to . . . soften the blow. Oh yeah, and I wanted to spend time with you.â
That is quite a speech. And it leaves me speechless.
A waiter comes and brings us our main courses, buying me time to form a response.
âWell, thank you,â is all I have. Itâs lame and inadequate, but itâs the best I can do. I am trying to ignore the truth of what heâs said and focus on the fact that heâs done all this for me.
